CHAPTER NINE
Dad and I stood outside, side by side, staring at the Gate. Intentionally not looking at each other.
I had to admit; I was a little nervous. Not about playing with the magic surrounding the Gate⦠well, okay, maybe a little after the other night and that damn dinosaur. But seriously, Dad felt like the bigger monster. I knew he wasnât the father I had when I was younger, even though he seemed the same. He acted the same. But I had seen the parasite inside of him. I would always know it was there.
That thing had used Lily for its own gain, whatever that was. I was sure it would find some way to use me as well. But I didnât have a choice. I had to do this. Everything in me wanted to learn how to work the Gate.
âThe Gates are the pathways between the worlds.â Dad started with the obvious. I restrained myself from rolling my eyes, sure Dad would see it somehow. âHow much have you read in the book?â
Then again, perhaps I could convince him to skip the basics.
âThere are many worlds and many time lines and the Gates connect them all. Earth, here and now, is just one world, one time line. We consider it a good one, since our Earth is full of resources - people, magic, water, minerals, animals - the natural world. Many other worlds are not as well off as this one. Heck, other time lines for this Earth are not as plentiful as this one is, with humans destroying it, turning the world into a dystopian hell.â
I paused, my eyes scanning the trees on the far side of our yard, before traveling up the nearby mountain. Swallowing, I continued.
âThere are worlds that could be our basis for the religious concepts of Heaven and Hell. Some feel that the Holy Gate described in the Bible is just a one-way Gate into a supposedly Heaven-like world - perhaps this one based more on a personâs condition than on their power, allowing it to open upon death. Some think that even for that one, there is a Gatekeeper. The Ferryman who crosses the River Styx. St. Peter in front of the Gates of Heaven. Hades for Hell.â I shrugged.
Dad turned to study me as I spoke. I could feel the weight of his stare as I refused to meet his eyes, keeping my eyes on the Gate in front of us. I think I surprised him, but he didnât let it sway his lesson.
âTime lines?â He really wanted to probe what I had discovered for myself.
I cocked my head, squinting to follow a slight purple swirl in the Gateâs energy.
âTime lines are the basis of time travel. They multiply out the number of worlds when one adds the dimension of time. For Earth, the concept is strange - three major points. Time before and time later. We stand in the middle, in the time here, or some might call it now. As Gatekeepers, we can send people back in time, but that could impact what is happening here.
